The story

During my semestral university exchange programme, at Griffith University in Australia, Brisbane, I picked up jewellery-making. With the many pieces I made, I started selling them at Nanyang Technological University, School of Art, Design and Media's Valentines day fair. The results emboldened me to continue the businesses amid my studies and even after I started working full-time.

I officially launched my website in 2021 January and held pop-up sales once every month at different shopping centers and markets. It is an additional job aside from my full time at KOBO, however, I enjoy every single moment spent making and marketing my jewellery.

Take a look at some of my collections below.

This collection focuses on 14k gold-filled chains and wires with fresh water pearls. I love baroque pearls because all of them are unique. Many of my products are one-of-a-kind as they are hand made and sometimes created by chance and unable to replicate.

"I'm inkuehdible" in a quirky and punny title that encourages one to believe that they are incredible. "Kueh" a.k.a "cake" are local Singaporean delicacies that are often derived from the Nyonya culture. Making them into jewellery not only brings the nostalgic group of people to SoChinq, but also those who appreciates the real edible kueh.

I sewed a bag inspired by a folded mask in 2020 and posted it on TikTok for fun. Little did I know that the video will go viral, receiving 102k views, 13.4k likes, and over 200 comments asking me to start selling.

MAYA Mask bag.

Why the name MAYA you may ask?

The language of the Maya is not only still spoken by about half a million people, but it also symbolizes the supernatural power wielded by gods and demons.

Maya is the power by which the universe becomes apparent; the illusion or appearance of the phenomenal world.

(credit to google dictionary)

It is a powerful word.

The “mā” in Sanskrit means ‘create’ and sochinq is all about creating new and original ideas. Let alone the fact that “ Mask” & “Maya” sounds similar.

There isn’t a more suitable word than MAYA, hence the MAYA BAG.
